Hi all. First I want to let everyone know that I will be AWOL for about a week- so Dayna's Minerals will be closed during that time. I will be unable to do orders or reply to emails. The kids and I are going to visit family- about an 8 hour drive- before school starts back up--- Aug. 5 if you can believe!!! Orders I've already taken have been/will be shipped before I leave though.
DH's last day of "old" job is today. He's dreading it because he's afraid of too much emotion. He's worked with some of these folks for 10 years and considers as a second family. I often kid him about all his "work wives" or "work family" because he'll say "Didn't I tell you that?" and I'll say "No, it must have been one of your other wives" LOL Tomorrow he actually starts his new job. Originally the first day was to be Monday but he has some important meetings over the weekend they need him at- so it was pushed up. So I thought I'd take this opportunity to visit both sides of our family since we wouldn't see much of DH anyway.
Yesterday "Bubba" came back and did get my washing machine working- although I still suspect that it's not right because I do not experience the shortened drying times that others rave about with this machine. My first load was DH's jeans (that are no longer available) and after 80 minutes in the dryer- they were still very damp and I had to dry a second time. I did use white vinegar as everyone suggested and am considering using this in my laundry routinely- we have extremely hard water around here and it seemed that the clothes came out fresher/cleaner using the vinegar. Thank you to all the great laundry tips!! I still have an appointment with another repairman- along with parts- that I decided to keep and see if the spinning issue is all in my head--- yes, I was being a little "punny" here. LOL I called MIL yesterday to discus our visit and she said that her washer has her drying time to about the same as a load of laundry- so I'm guessing that it may not be in my head. In-laws have dinner plans on Saturday night but that actually works to advantage- the kids and I are going to make plans with others in the family.
When I called the one SIL about this she said she was going to call me actually about something completely different- her boss was cleaning out her grandmother's house and found 10 boxes of Lablache Face Powder- in "Flesh." Each box contains like 3 cardboard containers of this face powder- still sealed and everything. She asked me about it since I am the "professional" in the makeup world. I did a little research on it- OK, I "goggled" it LOL- and only found vintage ads for it- nothing about the powder itself. I figured I'd send this out to the others here and maybe someone else would know/find something more about it. Anyone?
The car was repaired by Monday afternoon- so that's done. The washer is at least working and I can do laundry, even if it takes longer to dry that I think it should. Haircut was decent- I am trying to grow out but back was shaped up- "stacked" so it looks less Mrs. Brady shag and more updated. The only added drama is that several of the shirts we bought for DH Sat. have shrunk way too much. Rather frustrating since we asked sales person- he tried them on at the store and there was room for reasonable shrinkage but this one brand, they all shrunk to make him look like he's wearing something from his childhood. I hope they will take them back, even though washed--- it's not like we washed them without trying them on before. Other brands did not have this issue. It's about $100 or so of shirts that are unwearable due to shrinkage. So this afternoon I'll have to deal with that. DH is wondering if I'll have all these shirts done before I leave. He also asked me to show him how to do laundry- when he gets back on the weekend he plans to do jeans. Sad that I have to instruct him on this simple task huh? He actually has a masters in chemical engineering. ;-P
Here are my FOTD since last time... BTW I attempted my first lippie- not 100% on it but not too bad for first try. This one ended up being a rather glossy lip balm with a my lips but better tint of color. So when I get back that will be a focus after I get through all the emails and stuff I'll miss during the week.
Once again- foundation is same for all- Dayna Dark with a touch of Beach- applied using MMBB hydrating mist, red cleansing sponge- damp application. Beach then applied as bronzer using Face Fab technique. Earthy Girl as brow fill.

Most children begin recognizing some letters between the ages of 2 and 3 and can identify most letters between 4 and 5. This means that you can start teaching your child the alphabet when he's around 2 — but don't expect full mastery for some time. What's more, toddlers learn differently from older children, so don't pull out the flashcards and audiotapes just yet. Instead, rely on visual aids such as colorful alphabet picture books — your child will have a great time pointing out the letters he knows, as well as colors, shapes, animals, and other objects in the book.
Cheenee is such a genius. She has mastered (well almost) the alphabet at 1 year 9 months! Can name shapes, sing several songs, speak in clear five-word (familiar) sentences, her vocabulary is simply amazing! (no, i cannot honestly credit the Doman method. This child is simply an intellectual-in-the-making!) My mom, my in-laws are dumb-founded with Cheenee's various gifts. Her intellectual level is even BEYOND the advanced skills of 30-month-old children !!!
We cannot be thankful enough for this blessing. We are simply proud parents of Cheenee and our angel Jethro.
i know, what are the chances???
well, when the boss is away... geminisc comes out to play ;)
muahahHAHAHhahaha
*ahem*
I went down to a new op shop today. I was originally in there to find a water barrel to use for my markets. I found something that was the right size, but didn't like the push mechanism - I wanted a tap type mechanism - so I didn't get it.
Instead, somehow or other I found myself going through the clothesracks - surprise surpise. =P
This is one of the first tops I picked up. I love the colour - it's a bright red-pink that always looks nice on me.
V-neck with some elastic ribbing across the bottom, and some girly sleeves.I also tried it on back to front - and it still worked quite nicely. (I was trying to use it as a layer to work with the white top below)
I hesitated a little on buying it, but when I spotted the tag buried in the side, I couldn't resist.
It's a FCUK top. I've always loved all things from them, and I must say, I rationalised it to myself in the craziest of ways. I stood there in the change room telling myself "I didn't even know it was a brand-type top. I just loved the colour and it fits, and the design's nice. The fact that it's a brand I like just means that it was meant to be." That and the fact that it was only $6. FCUK never sells anything for $6 - even on special. I've bought tops from them for $30 and thought I was getting a good deal. See? I'm crazy.
The next one I got was a cheapy top. SES Brand. But I liked the floral embroidery (always a sucker for embroidery) and it's one of those tie-back ones. The front bit is interesting, because it's a ribbon-tie-together thing, rather than buttons. And it fits. At $7, I probably could've NOT bought this one, but I couldn't resist the embroidery. On a lucky day I reckon you could've gotten that top at SES for about $9. So not much in terms of bargain. But it's pretty and girly enough.
Last but not least was this cute Johnny Dexter black dress. The label had a huge red heart on it - so I had to buy it, if only for that. LOL
I just googled them, coz the name rings a bell somewhere. Apparently it's an Australian brand. Not that I should care - as long as it looks good on you who cares what the brand is right? Having said that, I always check labels at op shops. I figure if it's a brand name (even just a chain dept store) it will give me an idea of how long the item will last. Eg, a top from CUE or ESPRIT is likely to survive longer in my wardrobe after a few washes than say, a top from supre or sportsgirl. That said, I always feel the fabric and check for defects etc
I'm sorry that the pics are so bad - I took them on the sly at work. The tops are just draped over my desk here. Can't really drape them properly or borrow a clotheshanger or something to really show you. Anyway, this dress is a little 60s. Fits very well, finishes above the knee and flares out a little. Will look super cool with my knee-high boots. If I dare to wear it to work of course. It's a bit more fashionable than your usual work dresses - and I hardly ever wear work dresses. But at $9 this was an absolute steal. I'm gonna go home and try and pair it with one of my white shirts to see what it will look like then. But yeah, might be a bit too spicy for work. Although then it becomes a matter of when WOULD I actually wear the damn thing?? Sometimes I think I'm just not very brave when it comes to clothes and fashion...
Oh, and before I forget, here are the $10 leather gloves I got at the market the other day. My hands always smell 'leathery' when I take them off, so I think these really are the "real deal"
Will try and take the pics of the box and the lingerie soon. Spent last night trying to put some semblance of order into my lab - it's a total mess atm. *gulp*
So ever since I started making my own mmu and skincare, I've found myself buying less and less. Why go to the trouble of buying eyeshadows that I've never tested before when I can make my own in any colour or texture (shimmer, glitter, sheen, matte) that I want?
Why buy foundation and spend HOURS sorting out my best match before going back and buying again and again and again... when I can spend HOURS making my own best match before making it in bulk and having a big 60gram jar full of foundation?
I've never used much blush, concealer or bronzer, so that's no biggie off my list. And my skincare regime is working pretty well atm. I love the control I have as to what ingredients I use. Lipstick colours are limitless, I can make a super thick face cream for the dry days, and a light one that sinks in well during the hot ones.
THe only thing I can't make are jars and bottles and brushes.
...mMMmmm... BRUSHES!!!
Anyhow, I was reading up on some of my favourite bargain sites and came across this: Price USA.
They are an Australian-based company that lets me buy things that sometimes are only for USA only. They order in the US for me, so I can take advantage of "free shipping on domestic orders" or any other US-based specials.
It's a 5% commission on anything that you buy plus all the shipping costs involved - but they only ship with USPS.
I had a look at their website and it looks pretty good to me. The reviews I read elsewhere suggest that this is one of the more reasonably-priced forward mailers out there.
I'm currently sitting here trying to think of all the mmu stores that I've thought about buying from but have either dismissed because of shipping costs, or because their special offers were for US residents only.
OooOooo a girl like me could get so tempted!!!!
Has anyone else heard of this place or used them or something similar? What kind of experience did you have?
I love a great deal. There are two types of deals. Something expensive that you get for a steal or an awesome copy of an expensive item. I love both of these deals- but let the buyer beware.
This weeks podcast is about this sort of thing. Ebony and I will discuss looking like a million for pennies.
Now to do this is a very tricky thing. You want to do this without looking cheap or tacky. I love to mix and match items. Wear expensive jeans with a tank from Old Navy and shoes from Target. The best thing to do is to read your fashion and style magazines and see what the trends are. The next thing to do is clean out your closet and see what you own. Now you are ready to shop.
This time of year it is a great time to get a bargain. Especially at the expensive boutiques. they have to get rid of the summer inventory and most stores are now offering 25-50% discounts on items. Don't buy to buy. Find great classic pieces like a good pair of white pants or a funky baby doll top that you can dress up anytime of year. You can also find great designer shoes on sale now. Robin said she found an $800 pair of heels for $298. She had to purchase them. I also stocked up on some Juicy terry pants that were marked down about 30%. Those pants do not change each year. When you buy some quality pieces, they will last a long time too. Also if you plan on going on vacation this winter, it is great to find cover ups, shorts and bathing suits now for your trip during the year. If you wait until February- you will pay top dollar.
What about imposter's? Fakes? Imitations? Designer Inspired items? Let the buyer beware. Look at the real deal first. Then you be the judge. I think if you wear a fake bag, fake sun glasses, fake shoes, and fake jewelry- you will look fake. But if you mix and match a few good with a few fake- you will keep them guessing. I love my Ballenciaga inspired bag fromBoutique on Feet. I will wear it with my Tory Birch Shoes and Seven Jeans. I also love my new sandals from Target. I pair this up with designer jeans, a Prada belt and a plain $10 tank top for an adorable outfit. My favorite items from target are their shoes, accessories, jeans and T shirts. Not everything in Target is or for that matter looks great. Be selective. Buy what fits well too.
I also heard Steve and Barry's are going out of business- which is a shame. My Friend Linda and I just bought jeans for $8.98 last weekend. It actually cost more to get the jeans hemmed, then to buy them.
Another place to get a good deal is on the Internet. There are multiple sites that advertise discounts, including free ship on the Internet. Look around for discount codes before you click the order button. You will be surprised on what you can find.
At Loose Lips New York- We always come up with a weekly special. This weeks special should not disappoint. Buy our Collage Powder and Kabuki Brush together for only $25. You will save $11. That is huge. Also check out our sale page too. Usually big discounts there too. Most web stores have a sale page. Great place to find really great deals.
Hope you can join us on the podcast- if not listen after the show for more money saving tips!

ARGHHHHH!! It's been one of those times again. Saturday DH and I went down to mall so he could purchase some new golf shirts for his new job. He is a horrible shopper because he's in such a hurry. He had quickly seized 6 shirts, regardless of price and headed to the checkout. I tried to get him to "look around" but NOOOOO. So we are getting ready to leave store and across the way from checkout are some really nice shirts for much less money. So 4 more are purchased but it leaves me feeling I didn't do a good job- poor bargain-hunter in me was not satisfied by this experience at all. We headed to Gap because DH wanted new jeans and they no longer have the baggy style that fits him perfectly *@(&^%$@#%* He tried on the Loose fit at the store and that was a definite no go. It is so darn frustrating- jeans are made for these large hipped, flat rear-ended, no thighs, thick wasted "men" and there is NOTHING available for a man that is the least bit athletic. We also have issues with shirts- to get the right size in shoulder, the waste is HUGE- made for the majority of men who all have huge guts and no shoulders. It's truly a nightmare trying to find clothing for someone who is FIT these days.
So, Sunday morning Hoozey puts a load of laundry into Whirlpool Duet washer that was purchased mid-March- almost every one of new shirts included in this load along with a couple of pairs of his jeans (that are no longer replaceable) Washer stops and instead of being done there is a fault code. Follow instructions and to put it succinctly nothing works and clothes are locked in washer wet!!! *cries* Of course no one works at Whirlpool on Sunday AND service appointment has me at Tuesday at the earliest. *@)(*$#^%* I even went down to store that sold it to me in hopes that they had a "connection" someone/anyone that may be able to at least get the damn clothes out. Nope, it's a bunch of "sorry we don't actually have a service dept." and that's that. *grinds teeth*
Fast forward to Monday morning. I am getting ready to go to post office to get orders out and phone rings. It's another service provider that will come out today but he has Dr. appointment first. Actually works to my advantage because on my way home from PO I am dropping car off to have it checked out because there's this loud clunking sound going over certain bumps/turns/inclines--- that can't be good. So I'll have time to do this before he shows up. At noon, I haven't heard a peep but I have original service group calling saying already ordered the part and won't be in until 17th, so he won't be out until after he has part. "Um, excuse me but you haven't even taken a look at it..." Repairman (RM) "I know what's wrong already." "I have a load of brand new clothing- hundreds of dollars at that- trapped in there wet!!! We've tried everything to get it to open and I need help at LEAST getting it open so I can save this clothing." *whines* RM "Sorry" *@%$#&^*
So I call the guy that I spoke to this morning--- I swear it was like he completely forgot that he promised to come out. No disrespect but I was tempted to not leave my name and number on Sunday because the message made me question this person's capabilities- he didn't seem capable of escaping a paper bag if you supplied him with scissors. *shakes head- what's the world coming to* Phone call to Whirlpool didn't help either... 15 minutes--- I checked- on hold to finally speak to someone that didn't give one lick of help. *pulls hair out* I did say that if this laundry is ruined I am going to ship the damn stuff to them and sue them for damages. It's criminal to pay $1000 for a washing machine that can ruin half that in laundry because there is no manual override to get the clothes out when it breaks down after less than 4 months.
I suspect that I've had a problem from day one- I didn't experience the "less drying time" that others rave about with this machine. Since I have nothing to compare it to- I had a top loader before- if it wasn't right at the beginning and not spinning clothes out as much, I didn't know any better. Anyone have a Duet? How dry should they feel if the machine is actually working?
Anyhoo, eventually "Bubba" showed up to checkout my washer. He was a very large man and honestly I'm not sure he should be in the business of repairing washing machines. At one point he was on the floor and wasn't quite sure he'd be able to make it back upright. He had no clue what was wrong with it and had to call in about that but at least he did get the door open eventually. I watched and next time around I will be removing panels and doing what needs to be done to get my clothes out--- they are already smelling a little funky after about 28 hours stuck in there. I had to dry for about 5 hours to get them dry! I am hoping I can get the smell out- any advice on reviving clothes that can't be bleached with chlorine? So I will be heading to the laundry mat to try and salvage that load- plus I have to get it done because DH needs that stuff by Friday. *rubs head in frustration*
At least he car is fixed- drives much better too- imagine that. It was "stabilizer links" Only $22.23 for parts but of course the labor was over $100. *sigh* Before I depress myself any more, I should get a shower and see about getting a haircut... it's been driving me crazy. Let's just hope that some craziness doesn't happen there and I end up coming home bald or with a mullet because that's just about been my luck lately.
